Is the sequel to “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.” Published in 1871, it finds Alice once again stepping into a fantastical, nonsensical world, this time by passing through a mirror in her living room.
The looking-glass world is structured like a giant chessboard, with Alice beginning as a pawn and aiming to reach the eighth square to become a queen. As she travels across this inverted landscape, where cause and effect are often reversed and time can flow backward, she encounters a new cast of eccentric characters. These include the argumentative Tweedledum and Tweedledee, the philosophical Humpty Dumpty, the constantly bumbling White Knight, and the imperious Red and White Queens.
