Dust: Egypt’s Forgotten Architecture leads us seductively into some of the most breathtaking architectural spaces of Egypt’s recent past, filled with a sense of both the immense weight and impermanence of history. About the Photographer: Xenia Nikolskaya is a Russian-Swedish photographer and visual artist, based in Cairo, Egypt. Xenia studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, received her MFA from the Russian Academy of Fine Arts in St. Petersburg in 1998, and her Ph.D. from the University of Sunderland, UK. Nikolskaya’s work has been exhibited in 20 solo and 40 group shows internationally and is held in prestigious collections, such as The State Hermitage Museum, Sveriges Allmaänna Konstförening, UBS Bank and in the Bibliotheca Alexandrina Arts Centre. Newsweek, GEO, Cosmopolitan, and ELLE have commissioned her work. Fulbright fellow, Nikolskaya was teaching photography at the Russian Academy of Fine Arts, St. Petersburg State University, Rutgers University, New York, and American University in Cairo. She is currently teaching at the German University in Cairo. Her first book “Dust” has been published in March 2012 with Dewi Lewis Publishing, UK. During her work as a head of the exhibition department and photo archive at RIA Novosty, Xenia curated about 50 exhibitions and edited several books, including “Anatoly Garanin, Soviet Union” which has been shortlisted Russian National Book Design Contest – Zarkniga. She was also on a jury of The Andrei Stenin International Photo Contest and The Ukrainian Photographer of the year. Her 2nd book “The House My Grandfather Built” was published in 2020 by Nikolskaya-Lund Publishing, Sweden, and received the Best Swedish Photobook of the Year Prize in 2021.

ورشة المرونة النفسية مع طوني جورج الأربعاء ٢٥ يناير ٦-٩ مساء ديوان مصر الجديدة بنتفاجئ كتير من القوة الداخلية الموجودة عند بعض الناس اللي حوالينا واللي بتخليهم يعدوا ظروف صعبة ومؤلمة جداً من غير ما يتكسروا وينتهوا.. ظروف صعبة جداً زي الفقد والترك والخسائر المادية والنفسية الكبيرة وكمان الأمراض الصعبة وغيرها. وبنتسائل ليه وإزاي هم عرفوا يرجعوا يعيشوا ويحلموا ويكملوا ويستمروا وينجحوا؟ الحقيقة كل دا بسبب مرونتهم النفسية الداخلية: رشاقتهم النفسية، استرداديتهم في اللقاء دا مع الكاتب طوني جورج هنتكلم عن معنى الاستردادية (المرونة أو الرشاقة النفسية)، وعن أدوات تمكّننا من بناءها في حياتنا، عشان نعيش حياة أكثر راحة وانتاجية وبتماسك داخلي يحمينا من الانكسار.

Story Writing Workshop with Mai Serhan 6 Sessions every Saturday starting 28 Jan Diwan, Heliopolis 12:00pm Book your place here! Introduction to Story Writing Workshop: This intensive story writing workshop will introduce aspiring writers to the main pillars of the story: Place, People, Plot, Purpose, Perspective & Finding Your Voice. We will be looking at how to write space effectively, how to set-up a scene, how to build characters that are convincing and engaging, how to form a narrative arc, and what lies at the heart of every story from needs, wants, and conflicts. Sessions will involve reading from world literature, discussion and analysis, various writing prompts, and feedback on writing generated within the sessions. Schedule: Sessions will be every Saturday from 12pm to 3pm at Diwan Bookstore, Heliopolis. Jan 28: Write space effectively Feb 4: Build engaging characters Feb 11: Develop a compelling plot Feb 18: Grasp conflict & purpose Feb 25: Determine perspective & voice About Mai Serhan: Mai Serhan is a writer and translator who is currently pursuing her graduate studies in Creative Writing at the University of Oxford. Her poetry, short stories, memoir, and essays have been published widely in regional and international literary journals. She’s been short-listed for the Oxford-BNU Award in Creative Writing, the Quarterly West Poetry Chapbook Contest by the University of Utah, and The Lunch Ticket Poetry Contest by Antioch University in Los Angeles. Mai is also the winner of the Emerging Writer Award by Wellstone Center in the Redwoods, California, and the FH Pasby Award in Creative Writing from the University of Oxford.
